A synchronous motor is an AC motor whose rotor speed is the same as the speed of the rotating magnetic field of the stator. The rotor speed is n = 60f/p, where p is the logarithmic frequency and f is the power frequency. The speed n depends on the power frequency f; therefore, the power supply frequency must be constant for the speed to remain constant and independent of the load. It features high operational stability and strong overload capacity, and is commonly used in multi-machine synchronous drive systems, precision speed control systems, and large equipment.
